What is scratchboard art?

Scratchbord (Ampersand brand) is a kaolin clay ground surface coated in ink that the artist can scratch away at with various abrasive tools to reach the white clay surface below. Various textures and values can be created based on tools and pressure used. Tools include various blades, sand paper, microderm and tattoo needles to name a few! Basically, if it can scratch the surface it can be used!. Colors can be added using inks and other mediums for a vibrant look. The surface is sealed with a spray fixative and does not require to be under glass. If you’d like to see this in action check out my social medias!
